The International Development and Education Awards (IDEA) were established to connect young oncologists in low- and middle-income countries (LMCs) with oncology leaders based in Canada and the United States to establish mentoring relationships. The award includes attendance at the ASCO Annual Meeting and a post-meeting visit to the Mentor's institution, with the aim of developing a long-term, knowledge-sharing relationship to improve cancer care in the Mentee's home country. The International Development and Education Award in Palliative Care (IDEA-PC) provides this same opportunity for early-career oncologists with a specific interest in palliative medicine. Since 2002, Conquer Cancer has awarded more than 350 IDEA and IDEA-PC awards to recipients in 63 countries.

The objectives of the IDEA program are to:

    1. Promote professional development of young oncologists from low-and-middle-income countries
    2. Disseminate knowledge learned at Annual Meeting in the global oncology community
    3. Create lasting relationships between award recipients and their mentors
    4. Inform ASCO and its members about cancer care in LMCs
    5. Extend awareness of ASCO, its mission, and services to LMCs
    6. (IDEA-PC): integrate palliative care services into cancer care in LMCs

The IDEA program is evaluated via surveys administered to awardees and their mentors one-month after the Annual Meeting of their award year, as well as follow-up surveys sent to recipients one and five years after their award. Among other outcomes:

    • Three-fourths of 2017 alumni and all but one 2013 alumni who responded to the surveys reported that the program had a significant impact on their career position.
    • All respondents from the 2017 cohort reported sharing what they learned at the program with their colleagues.
    • Five years later, 67% of 2013 alumni who responded to the survey reported renewing their ASCO membership after the complimentary ASCO membership expired.

The full report for the 2018 award cycle is included in the Global Oncology Interest Group library and at the bottom of this post. For more information about the IDEA program, please contact IDEA@asco.org.
