    Hello Research Community Forum,

Morrison Cancer Center in Hastings, Nebraska is a community hospital based cancer program. Recently, all the work put into making clinical trials available to the Hastings Nebraska rural community cancer patient population paid off.

Morrison Cancer Center now can offer high quality clinical trials through ALLIANCE and CTSU thanks to its affiliation with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. This is a huge accomplishment in making clinical trials available to rural Nebraskans.

Congratulations, Dr. Copur! I can only imagine how much went into building this new program!

Any advice to others building a research program?

I believe you're also helping to create an ASCO RCF At-A-Glance summary too, which is bound to be a great resource!

Thank you Patricia. Yes this was a work like the saying goes "it takes a village" and it is well worth it. In the community setting, where 85% of cancer patients receive their cancer care, providing access to high quality NCI clinical trials is a dream of every practicing community oncologist. Unfortunately, however, most of the time this remains a dream. I am so excited that my dream came true once again:) I had built an award winning community oncology research program in my prior affiliation and now I am building a new one in my new affiliation.

Building a research program at Mary Lanning Healthcare/Morrison Cancer Center in Hastings Nebraska is well worth hard work and endeavor. First, it takes institutional commitment. Then you need to identify an affiliation for IRB and other regulatory work which is usually non-existent in most community sites. Two main resources are an academic affiliation or an NCI -NCORP network site.  In building your research program main pillars in your institution include your pharmacy,  radiology, pathology, and primary care physician colleagues and of course a supportive hospital administration and budgeting department. I am thrilled that I was able to accomplish step by step what I described in my ASCO post article a year ago. . I am also so thankful and proud of ASCO Research Community Forum providing all the crucial resources in helping community oncologist understand and establish necessary steps.

After getting involved in community based clinical trials more than 20 years now, I have come up with this quote of mine " The quality of an oncology program is best measured by  looking into its  ability, capacity, and  and track record in their clinical trial performance" "Once you start dooing clinical trials, it is an automatic and mandatory elevation of all cancer related services in your institution, beginning with your medical oncology providers, going up  all the way   to surgeons,  radiation oncologists, pathologists, pharmacists, and radiologists and more"

Decentralizing research and making clinical trials available to the rural community is very important.  Your work is fantastic and we love having you as part of our community.  Keep up the great work!!
